ANALYSIS: The depleted Tampa Bay Rays pitching staff has been boosted by rookie Josh Fleming, with three wins from his three starts, a 3.52 ERA and 1.04 WHIP from 15.1 IP. Two of his starts have come against the Marlins including Friday's 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 2 K effort which followed a shutout performance through 5.1 IP (6 K). Despite striking out six Marlins in his second start, Fleming won't rack up many Ks with just four coming in his other 10.0 IP and an 18.3% K% through his three Major League starts. That is in line with his career Minor League strikeout rate of 17.94%.
While Fleming doesn't have swing and miss stuff, he makes up for it with his control evidenced by walking just two batters through his 15.1 IP this year and a Minor League career 4.44% BB%. Despite only being drafted in 2017, Fleming reached Triple-A last year and although he's not considered a high-end prospect (ranked 27th in the Rays farm system according to MLB Pipeline), Fleming is widely considered as a Major League ready pitcher. Likely to have three more starts this year, Fleming is lined-up to face the Red Sox, Orioles and Mets so has soft match-ups ahead. Fleming won't help your teams with strikeouts, but he can help with wins and your ratios late in the season making him worthy of streaming or rostering in 14+ team leagues.
