Josh Harrison Out 7 Weeks After Thumb Surgery

John Harrison will miss up to seven weeks after the Pittsburgh Pirates utility underwent surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, according to the Post-Gazette.

The 28-year-old was placed on the DL Monday because of the injury he suffered on Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. Harrison’s return won’t come until likely well into August.

Harrison was having a solid season for the 49-34 Pirates. He had a .279 BA with 4 HR, 22 RBI and 9 SB before going down with the thumb injury. He was really starting to the hit the ball well lately. In his last 10 games, he had 11 hits.

Harrison showed he could play just about anywhere on the field. He was started to play most of his games at third base. Jung-Ho Kang will likely see most of the action at third base until Harrison returns.

The Pirates are currently 4 1/2 games out of first place in the NL Central. With the St. Louis Cardinals ahead of them, Pittsburgh could be in the midst of a heated wild card race. The Pirates lead the wild card standings.
