Josh Tomlin Signs 2 Year Extension, Inside Job on 5th Starter Job

Cleveland.com's Zack Meisel is reporting that the newly extended Josh Tomlin is currently expected to be a part of the Tribe's rotation. Indians GM Mike Chernoff said, “he is going to play a meaningful role on this team and he'll have every opportunity to be in the starting rotation.”

Tomlin and the Indians are banking on the 31-year-old's continued progress since a 2012 Tommy John surgery wiped out nearly two full seasons for him. Since returning from the surgery in September 2013, his walks have decreased to professional lows while his K/9 rate exceeds the league average for the first time in his career. Despite all of that, his continually climbing HR/9 rate--reaching a career high 1.8 last season--is going to keep his potential limited to a 4th or 5th starter on a team that is too deep with MLB-ready talent to afford him a long leash. Deep league and AL-only owners do take note: if Tomlin can find a way to keep the ball in the yard as a starter, he could be a successful late round flyer or early season free agent grab.
