Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star adds that the base salary of Young's contract is worth $675,000. Incentives related to days on the roster, innings pitched and starts could increase the value of the contract by $5.325 million.
Chris Young, 35, missed the 2013 season but made a very impressive comeback season last year with the Seattle Mariners. With the Mariners, the 6'10" Young pitched to a 12-9 record with a 3.65 ERA. He appeared in 30 games (29 starts) and pitched in 165.0 innings. With a 5.9 K/9, Chris Young is not a strikeout pitcher by any means. Never a hard-throwing pitcher, Chris Young's fastball averaged at 85.3 MPH.
The Royals rotation already features a number of high quality arms, such as young talented pitchers Yordano Ventura and Danny Duffy. There is also a veteran presence in Jason Vargas, Edinson Volquez and Jeremy Guthrie. Where Chris Young will fit into this team will be determined eventually, whether it be as a member of the bullpen in long relief or maybe an eventual part of the rotation.
