Analysts: Miami Heat power forward/center Kelly Olynyk is an intriguing waiver wire add for fantasy owners who are in need of a big man who can shoot, score and pass. The 7-footer is averaging 9.0 points, 3.0 rebounds along with 2.3 assists in 20 minutes a game through the first nine games. He is shooting 44.8 percent from the floor, 28.9 percent on three-pointers and 81.8 percent from the charity stripe.
Olynyk scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists in 24 minutes against the Pistons on Monday. He was just 3-for-10 from the field, although all except one field goal attempt came from beyond the arc. Additionally, the former Gonzaga star -- who went 4-for-5 from the charity stripe -- added one steal and a blocked shot.
This season, Olynyk has scored in double-figures (four times). He also has dished out four or more assists (three) and grabbed at least five rebounds (twice). Each time he has posted those numbers, the sixth-year pro has seen a minimum of 20 minutes on the floor. If Hassan Whiteside (knee) is sidelined for an extended period, Olynyk would likely continue split time with Bam Adebayo at the five -- as they did against the Pistons.
Olynyk has proved to be a valuable contributor for his teams over his previous five seasons, whether as a starter or reserve. Things have not changed in the early going this year for the sixth-year pro. Despite getting off to a slow shooting start, the 27-year-old is scoring and shooting as efficiency as he ever has. So, fantasy owners in need of an inexpensive, versatile big man, they should pluck the former Gonzaga star as soon as possible.
