Ken Giles could very well be the final piece of Houston’s puzzle to success in 2016. Swiping him away from the Philadelphia Phillies in the offseason, the Astros will now likely swipe away the closer job from Luke Gregerson and hand it over to Giles. With the Phillies last season, Giles posted a 1.80 ERA, won six games, saved 15, and collected 12 holds. He also struck out 87 batters and allowed only 59 hits in 70.0 innings pitched.
Besides his five blown saves, attributed to his inexperience, there isn’t much to dislike about Giles. Although still relatively unproven, the reliever has made the most of his short time in the big leagues, and is a top ten fantasy relief pitcher. Giles keeps the ball in the ballpark, allowing only two home runs in 2015, and averages 96.96 miles per hour each pitch. The Astros are one of the best teams in the American League so we can expect plenty of save opportunities for Giles. Once closers start flying off the draft board, expect him to be gone almost as quickly as those ranked above him.
