Kris Medlen will begin a rehab assignment on Friday with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, according to MLB.com.
The Kansas City Royals pitcher is making another comeback for what is now his second Tommy John surgery. According to the report, Medlen will likely stay in the minors for 30 days. The next question is whether he’ll be used as a starter or relief pitcher when he rejoins the club.
The 29-year-old hasn’t pitched since 2013. In that season, Medlen went 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA and pitched just shy of 200 innings. That was with the Atlanta Braves, and it followed a 10-1, 1.57 ERA season in 2012.
His return could potentially mimic a deadline trade move for the Royals. Kansas City currently sits atop the AL Central with a 38-25 record. Last season, the Royals were one of the Wild Card teams. They were able to reach a seventh game of the World Series before falling short to the San Francisco Giants.
