ANALYSIS: “Really? You want me to play a Marlin this year?” Perhaps the first thought as you saw Brinson's name on this list. Yes, yes we do. First, look to the fact that Brinson actually wants to be in Miami. As a Florida kid, the chance to play in front of Mom was a critical piece of his early season interviews. Not only does this take some of the pressure off, but it will keep him in the line-up. Who are the Marlins going to play? Cameron Maybin? From the opening weekend of the season, Mattingly has shown he would sooner play him in right field to replace Garrett Cooper than take Brinson out of the line-up. The Marlins also need to show some early return for the firesale from the last offseason.
Enough soft stuff, let's talk baseball: Brinson’s speed and bat alone will keep him in the lineup after posting double-digit SBs and HRs in the minors the last two years. Another plus, Brinson was sub-20% in K% and over .330 in AVG for that same period. Will these numbers carry over? Only time will tell. But if you are looking for a bench player with expected ABs and potential upside you could do much worse than rostering Brinson.
