Marco Estrada was close to a perfect game and a no-hitter, but finished with 8 2/3 of shutout ball for a no-decision on Wednesday against the Tampa Rays.
The 31-year-old Toronto Blue Jay has now pitched two close no-hitters. The perfect game came to an end with one out in the eighth inning when Logan Forsythe had an infield single where he just beat the throw from Josh Donaldson. Estrada was pulled after allowing a double with two outs in the ninth inning in a 0-0 game.
Estrada (3-5, 3.92 ERA) finished with 10 strikeouts, but had a no-decision as the Jays defeated the Rays 1-0 in extra innings.
In his last start, he went seven innings without allowing a hit. The only hit came in the eighth inning in what was a four-walk, one-hit victory, which was his fourth win in a row. Estrada was good enough to win his fifth in a row, but had the best performance of the 2015 season.
He has pitched a combined 15.2 innings over his last two starts. The Boston Red Sox will be his next opponent.
