The Seattle Mariners promoted Franklin Gutierrez from Triple-A Tacoma and will bat him second in Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, according to the Seattle Times.
The Mariners purchased his contract and will give him a shot at an important spot in the lineup. He will have Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz hitting behind him, which will give the 32-year-old some pitches to hit.
The outfielder missed a combined 313 games from 2011 to 2013, according to the report. He was eventually diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, an arthritic condition that affects his hips and lower body.
In 2015, Gutierrez has a .317/.402/.500 batting with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 48 games this at the Triple-A level.
Gutierrez will start in left field and bat second Wednesday in his first major league game since September 27, 2013.
James Jones has been opted back down to Tacoma.
