Marlon Byrd has been diagnosed with a fractured right wrist and will likely head to the DL, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
The injury happened when he was hit by a pitch during Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Sean O’Sullivan delivered the pitch inside, and it hit the wrist of the Cincinnati Reds outfielder. X-rays revealed the fracture.
More information on the injury is expected Wednesday after the veteran is further evaluated. It could be a stint on the DL for a few months. The Reds (22-28) could very well be far out of playoff contention by the time the 37-year-old returns. Brennan Boesch and Skip Schumaker will likely take his spot in left field.
The injury will also end up costing Byrd an $8 million option that would have vested if he reached 550 plate appearances this year, which essentially guarantees that he will be a free agent after the season.
