Matt Adams will likely head to the DL after being diagnosed with a strained right quad on Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The Cardinals first basemen hurt the quad while rounding first base on a double in the fifth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Arizona Dbacks. The 26-year-old slugger limped off the field and did not return to the game.
The Cards have won three games in a row and sit atop the N.L. Central with a 30-16 record. They will miss the presence that Adams has in the middle of the lineup. He’s usually the cleanup hitter for St. Louis, but has had his struggles this season.
Adams has a .243 BA with four homers and 20 RBI. Last season he had a .288 BA with 15 HR and 68 RBI.
Veteran Mark Reynolds will likely take over the duties at first base for St. Louis.
