Matt Adams To Undergo Surgery (Quad) Out 3-4 Months

Matt Adams’ season is now in jeopardy as the St. Louis Cardinals first basemen will undergo surgery on Friday to repair a torn right quadriceps muscle.

The same 3-4 month timetable that the Cardinals announced on their Twitter account still stands now that it has been reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Adams will go with the surgery. He suffered the injury on Tuesday while rounding first base.

"It's going to be a while," general manager John Mozeliak told USA Today "This is not something that's going to be 15 days. Hopefully, in the next couple days we'll have a better understanding but he's going to miss some time."

This is a big loss for a St. Louis team that currently sits atop the N.L. Central. Adams, 26, is the team’s cleanup hitter and even though his numbers were down this season, is a presence that is hard to replace. In 2015, he had a .243 BA with 4 HR and 20 RBI.

Mark Reynolds will get the initial shot as his replacement. The 31-year-old veteran has a .253 BA with 3 HR and 13 RBI in 99 at-bats. Reynolds has never been a good BA hitter. His bat is strictly for power and driving in runs. Throughout his nine-year career, Reynolds has 227 HR and 626 RBI.
