Matt Holliday was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right quadriceps, according to Jim Hayes and Fox Sports.
The St. Louis Cardinals slugger suffered the injury in the outfield during Monday’s loss in Denver versus the Colorado Rockies. Holliday had to sprint to grab a fly ball in left and appeared to take a bad step before hitting the ground.
"It's something with the (right) quad," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told USA Today on Tuesday. "We don't know the extent right now. We'll get it looked at; figure out where we go from there."
Matheny told reporters that he does not believe the injury is as bad as Matt Adams, which required surgery. St. Louis is still awaiting the results from an MRI. Randal Grichuk will likely get the first stab at left field during Holliday’s absence.
Despite the piling up injuries to Holliday, Adams and losing Adam Wainwright for the season, the Cards continue to sit atop the NL Central and the NL in general with a 38-20 record. The 35-year-old leaves the team for now with a .303 AVG, three home runs and 26 RBI.
