Analysis: Hopefully two months has been long enough to shake off the stigma that Melvin Upton's name has carried for the last couple of years, whether he deserved it or not. So far this season Melvin Upton has a .258 BA, .322 OBP, six home runs, and 10 SB for a power/speed figure of 7.5. The real question in regard to Upton should be: why are we so surprised? This is a guy with 283 career SB since 2004 and a career average power/speed figure of 16.33. Whether it is a year when his BA and OBP were down or he was down with injuries, he has always produced great power speed figures.
Upton boasts an impressive split this season against RHP against whom he has a .285/.338/.431 slash line. Upton has also improved his BA to .270 and his SLG to .440 in the month of May in which he has hit four of his six home runs on the season. Upton still hasn't lost his touch with the bat or on the base paths, so let go of the stigma that is unnecessarily attached.
