The New York Mets designated starting pitcher Dillon Gee for assignment on Monday.
The right-hander has drawn the small straw when it comes to the Mets starting rotation. After allowing eight runs on Sunday in only 3 2/3 innings pitched, he won’t be on the main roster 24 hours later.
The 29-year-old now has an ERA of 5.90. In eight starts this season, he has yet to win a game. Gee has been inconsistent this season after having a consistently positive career
The Royals, Rangers, Giants, Padres, Rockies, and Twins were among the teams linked to him this winter, according to Rotoworld.com. Gee has a 4.03 career ERA and a 1.31 career WHIP in 679 1/3 major league innings. He's making $5.3 million this season. His value has certainly decreased and time will tell if there’s a market out there for his services.
As of now, the Mets will use a five-man rotation, but there’s potential for Steven Matz to be called up to join the major league club. There’s also the possibility of moving Noah Syndergaard to the bullpen to make room for Matz. However, after his stellar start on Monday night against the streaking Jays, it will be a tough decision to make.
