Toronto Blue Jays: Brett Cecil got the nod in the closer by committee role on Monday night with Aaron Loup and Steve Delabar pitching in the 7th and 8th respectively and he converted his 2nd save of the season. Casey Janssen pitched 1 inning in a rehab assignment on Monday and may need 3-4 more outings before he comes back to Toronto. Cecil is the guy to own until Jannsen is back.
Los Angeles Angels: Ernesto Frieri got his job back Monday night when manager Mike Scioscia put him in the ninth and he converted the save with 2 k’s over the Yankees. After being demoted out of closers role, Frieri pitched 4.2 hitless innings to gain his managers trust back. If Frieri is available in your league, pick him up immediately.
New York Mets: Los Mets blew a lead in Miami on Monday. Matsuzaka gave up 3 runs while not recording an out. Scott Rice and Gonzalo German pitched in the 9th, with Rice picking up the loss. Farnsworth is still the closer as of now and pitched a scoreless inning last night.
Identity Thieves
These are a few relievers who have a chance to steal the closer’s identity, or at least vulture a few saves in the short term.
Cody Allen, CLE - John Axford has picked up losses in back to back games and has pitched in 3 straight.
Wade Davis, KC - Holland has worked back to back nights, blowing the save on Monday night. He might need a day of rest.
Tony Watson, PIT - Melancon blew the save Monday night against the Giants. The Pirates lead MLB in blown saves with 9. Most of that was Grilli however who should be back soon - it remains to be seen who the long term closer is in Pittsburgh.
