Oakland A’s: Jim Johnson recorded his 2nd save of the season on Wednesday night. He is being paid to be the closer, so as long as he can perform well, it’s his job. If he falters again, Luke Gregerson is waiting in the wings.
Toronto Blue Jays: Casey Janssen made his first rehab appearance and pitched a scoreless inning. Brett Cecil should still get the save chances until his return.
Baltimore Orioles: Tommy Hunter and Zach Britton had the night off last night so Darren O’Day got the save opportunity and converted it. Nothing changes in Baltimore; Hunter is still the closer and Britton the set-up man.
Houston Astros: If and when the Astros get a save chance, it looks as if both Chad Qualls and Anthony Bass will be sharing the closing duties, but if Thursday's game was any indication, Bass pitched the 8th and Qualls pitched the 9th.
Identity Thieves
These are a few relievers who have a chance to steal the closer’s identity, or at least vulture a few saves in the short term.
Danny Farquhar, SEA - Fernando Rodney has pitched in 3 out of the Mariners last 4 games and coming off back to back appearances. Farquhar has converted on his only save chance so far this year.
A.J. Ramos, MIA - Steve Cishek has been very busy the last week or so, working 5 of last 7 games. This is a good thing for the Marlins no doubt, but look for Ramos or even Mike Dunn to get the ball in the 9th Friday night if needed.
Cody Allen, CLE -Axford has struggled in 2 of his last 3 outings seeing his ERA jump from 2.30 to 4.50. Any more struggles and Allen might take over. He's a great speculatory add right now.
