Molina Exits Early With Sprained Thumb

Yadier Molina left Sunday’s game early against the Chicago Cubs because he suffered a sprained left thumb.

The St. Louis Cardinals catcher was injured when he attempted to apply a tag on Anthony Rizzo at the plate. Rizzo was tagged out on what would have been the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth. Molina was immediately in pain, which led to the team’s medical staff to attend to the former seven-time All-Star. He was removed immediately.

Tony Cruz replaced him on Sunday and would be in line for additional work if Molina is forced to miss any action. The Cardinals will reevaluate the finger on Monday.

Molina has a .270 BA with 4 HR and 61 RBI in 135 games this season. The 12-year veteran had a few injuries this season and he will be a tough replacement for the best team in the National League.

There’s only two weeks left in the season with St. Louis holding a 4 1/2-game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates for first place in the NL Central.
