Mookie Betts (SS, BOS) - Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add in Deeper Leagues

ANALYSIS: Can't you just hear the Fenway faithful chanting for Mookie Betts now?

"MOOOOOOOKIEEEEEE, MOOOOOOOKIEEEEEE"

And who can blame them? Betts was the 51st ranked prospect coming into this season according to MLB.com and has been one of the hottest hitters in the minors all season, adding him to our list of waiver wire sleepers. Starting off 2014 in AA, he posted a .355 AVG with a .366 BABIP, drove in 6 HR, and stole 22 bases, all within his first 54 games at that level. Then, after being promoted to Pawtuket's AAA squad, Mookie showed the same sort of ability. His average did drop, and his K% was up in his time in AAA, but again, it was the first time he'd seen that level of competition and his numbers were still impressive. The Sox may be rushing things a bit here with Mookie, but their biggest issue this year has been getting hits, and that's all Betts has been doing. He will get plenty of playing time in Boston, with the mostly inept offensive play of Jackie Bradley Jr. and the recently acquired Stephen Drew. He's a utility guy who has the talent to be plugged in almost anywhere defensively, with the contact and speed of a top of the order guy. All of this makes Mookie a respectable waiver wire add in most 10+ team leagues and all AL-Only Leagues. There will more than likely be some struggles in the beginning, as he's only had 359 career at-bats at any level above high A, but if your team can roll with the possible SS hit until he puts it together, or you have room on your bench, fantasy managers could do much worse than taking a chance on Mookie Betts.

SIDE NOTE: Mookie was apparently destined for this, as both of his parents played baseball/softball for a good portion of their lives, and supposedly gave Markus (Mookie) Lynn Betts the initals "MLB" intentionally.
