NBA Waiver Wire: Shallow Leagues (Week 8)

It's Week 8 – it has been a rough season so far, and it's not getting any easier, as even more players have gone down with injuries lately. In times like this, the waiver wire is your friend. This week we've got some players to ride during their hot streak, and some consistent scoring to keep you a float during an injury plagued season.

This year, we're tossing out our old convention of separating waiver wire posts into positions, and instead, we're separating them into of league -- standard, shallow, deep, etc. The NBA is trending to positionless basketball, so we at RotoBaller should too.

For shallow (8-10 team) league adds, we use a general rule of thumb of an ownership rate of under 65% on Yahoo. All position eligibility based on Yahoo leagues.

Editor's Note: Our incredible team of writers received five total writing awards and 13 award nominations by the Fantasy Sports Writers Association, tops in the industry! Congrats to all the award winners and nominees including NBA Writer of the Year, Best NFL Series, MLB Series, PGA Writer and Player Notes writer of the year. Shallow League Adds for Week 8

Buddy Hield, SG – Sacramento Kings

Ownership: 53%

11.8 PPG / 3.7 REB / 1.6 AST / .439 FG%

Buddy Hield had a miserable October. He shot just .354 from the floor during the month, and endured a heavy sophomore slump as the season got under war. However, a move to the bench in November has seemingly revitalized Hield, and he is starting to put up some big numbers. Instead of his confidence taking a blow from the benching, it seems to have allowed it room to grow, as he destroyed opposing during the month.

The jury is still out on whether Hield will prove to be a starting guard in the league, or a vital Sixth Man scorer off of the bench, but that's now what this article if here for. This article is here to recommend who will help you win your weekly match-ups, and after a bumpy first quarter of the season, Hield is someone worth holding onto or adding, if he is available. There will be frustrating nights, like his zero points in seven minutes on Friday against the Bulls, but there will also be nights like his 19 point, six rebounds, four outing the next night when he added four triples and even a steal to the mix. Now that he is finding his confidence, there is enough upside to warrant a roster spot for Hield.

Austin Rivers, PG/SG/SF – Los Angeles Clippers

Ownership 65%

14.3 PPG / 3.4 AST / 2.3 2PM / .451 FG%

The Los Angeles Clippers have been leaning on Austin Rivers since Danilo Gallinari (glute) went down, and it is paying out dividends to Rivers' fantasy owners. The Clippers have been sliding all season long, and when Blake Griffin (knee) went down last week, it took a serious turn for the worse. But, you're not in this for the Clippers, you're in it for fantasy purposes, and with the absence of Griffin, the Clippers need somebody to take shots besides Lou Williams.

Despite poor shooting averages, Rivers is putting up enough numbers right now for you to ride for the time being. Coming off of a 30 point, five rebound, five assist game on Sunday, Rivers is now averaging 16.7 PPG with 5.1 AST over the past two weeks, adding in enough rebounds, steals, and three-pointers to offset the percentage hit you may take. It's the NBA, you've got to ride the hot hands.

Bojan Bogdanovic, SG/SF – Indiana Pacers

Ownership 59%

14.8 PPG / 3.2 REB / 2.2 3PM / .502 FG%

Every week I leave Bogdanovic off this list, and every week Bogdanovic continues to play well. Not to be confused with the other Bogdanovic, the Kings rookie Bogdan (not having a bad rookie season either), this Bogdanovic has been around for a while now and is putting together his best season yet.

He doesn't do much besides score points and hit threes, but he does those two things pretty damn well. He only grabs a few boards a game, nothing spectacular, but he does have games where he will shower in five or more triples while grabbing a handful of boards. That is a useful trait to have when you're battling in a close weekly match-up, and Bogdanovic has been consistent enough so far this season to be able to trust.
