Welcome to the Daily Fantasy Hockey (NHL DFS) lineup picks article for Wednesday, March 9th of the 2015/2016 NHL season. Each day we'll be providing you with a handful of forward, defensemen, and goaltender picks for DraftKings and FanDuel GPP and cash games.
Some of the best teams and players are set to take the ice in the six games slated for Wednesday. It's extremely difficult to avoid guys like Patrick Kane and Alexander Ovechkin, simply because they've been consistent all season and seemingly put points up each night. But if they're not getting you at least 8 fantasy points for their price, it's a bit of a letdown. The trick is picking them on the right night. Obviously.
Both Kane and Ovechkin head into what should be competitive games against the St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings respectively. Below you'll find a bunch of affordable guys and two backup goalies likely to start Wednesday; all of whom will help free up cap space for the aforementioned big shots. NHL DFS Picks for Wednesday, March 9th
A couple strategy notes. For cash game construction look for players who can contribute to your score when they are not providing offense. Examples are guys who take a ton of shots, defensemen who block a lot of shots(DraftKings). Also, look for guys who get powerplay time and especially Top 6 forwards. You can find value in players who join a new line due to an injury or just get a promotion and more ice time.
For large field tournaments (GPP's) you want to find payers who have multi point upside and can grab double digit fantasy points. To stack the most upside in your forwards a common strategy is to punt the defense position. This doesn't mean just grab anyone. Try and look for a D man who will be playing more PP time or might get a boost in overall playing time due to an injury.
Let's take a look at some solid plays for today's action.
Thomas Greiss - Goaltender, Islanders (DraftKings - $8,000 FanDuel - $9,000)
Thomas Greiss and the New York Islanders have the pleasure of facing the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday night, three days after beating the rivaled New York Rangers in a wild one. The Islanders are three points behind the Blue Shirts with three games on hand, and should continue gaining ground now facing the team with the least amount of points in the league. Greiss should be in between the pipes on Wednesday, in the second leg of a back-to-back for the Isles. Greiss has won his last two starts, and three out of his last four; the one loss coming in overtime.
Carter Hutton - Goaltender, Predators (DraftKings - $7,500 FanDuel - $8,500)
Hutton has won four out of his last five starts, the one loss also coming in overtime, and heads into a really solid matchup against the Calgary Flames. The Predators are also playing in back-to-back games and Pekka Rinne is likely to get the day off on Wednesday. The Flames give up the second most goals a game in the league which should open up plenty of opportunities for the Predators to give their backup goalie a lead; one he is more than capable of holding on to. Hutton has let up six goals in five starts and has also posted a shutout in two over that span.
Jeff Carter - Center, Kings (DraftKings - $5,900 FanDuel - $6,900)
Carter recently scored two goals in his last game against the Vancouver Canucks, while he also put the puck on net an insane nine times and blocked three shots. Carter is capable of producing for Daily Fantasy even if he doesn't score or post an assist but when he does either, you can be sure that his stat line and fantasy points will be bloated. The Kings host the league's best Washington Capitals and will need to bring their A-game in order to keep pace with the surging Anaheim Ducks, who are one point ahead of them in the schedule. Carter is a safe and affordable option on both DFS sites and is an awesome head-to-head play.
Mike Ribeiro - Center, Predators (DraftKings - $4,100 FanDuel - $5,600)
Ribeiro has been on fire lately and will look to continue building momentum against the lowly Flames. Ribeiro has posted a point in four straight games, and seven points overall in that span. He also blocked 13 shots and picked up two power play points in the four games, in around 16 minutes of ice time. Ribeiro is a cheap option whose price has slightly jumped and will free up plenty of cap space. Ribeiro should be used on both DFS sites and his appeal for FanDuel has jumped with his increased time on special teams.
Daniel Sedin - Winger, Canucks (DraftKings - $6,400 FanDuel - $7,600)
Sedin has posted two points in two games and four out of his last five. Sedin consistently puts up fantasy points each night, and almost guarantees even the tiniest of dents in your lineup considering how often he shoots on goal. He's averaging a point a game over his last ten and is always a safe and affordable option. The Canucks host the Arizona Coyotes who have given up the most total goals so far and 3.12 per contest, highest in the NHL.
Kyle Okposo - Winger, Islanders (DraftKings - $ 5,900 FanDuel - $6,700)
Okposo has also been red hot of late. He has posted two points in three straight games (two goals, four assists) and does just enough in other areas, like shots on goal and blocked shots, to add to his fantasy numbers. Okposo hasn't finished a season with a positive plus/minus since 2011 so his value for FanDuel takes a hit each night by not landing on the plus side of the scale. He makes up for it with his time on the power play.
Roman Josi - Defenseman, Predators (DraftKings - $7,000 FanDuel - $5,500)
Josi is an animal and is the top defenseman on the card Monday night. Josi is an ideal defensive candidate for Daily Fantasy because of his abilities on both sides of the ice. In his last game against the Colorado Avalanche, Josi didn't post a goal nor a helper but still put up 4.0 fantasy points on DraftKings; four shots on goal and four blocked shots. All the top guys on Nashville should benefit from their matchup against the Flames as they securely hold the top wild card spot in the Western Conference. The Predators are a manageable seven points behind the St. Louis Blues for third place in the Central Division, and are 7-0-3 in their last ten games. Josi is a bit pricey but not pricey enough to break your bank solely on him.
Dan Hamhuis - Defenseman, Canucks (DraftKings - $3,200 FanDuel - $3,600)
Hamhuis has only ten points in 41 games played this season. Four of them have come in his last three contests, two goals and two assists. Hamhuis has scored in two straight and can tally just enough blocked shots and shots on goal to give your team a big enough boost for his low price. It also never hurts when you're facing the Coyotes. Hamhuis should be used strictly in tournaments and avoided in head-to-head contests.
