NHL DFS Picks for Wednesday, April 20th
A couple strategy notes. For cash game construction look for players who can contribute to your score when they are not providing offense. Examples are guys who take a ton of shots, defensemen who block a lot of shots(DraftKings). Also, look for guys who get powerplay time and especially Top 6 forwards. You can find value in players who join a new line due to an injury or just get a promotion and more ice time.
For large field tournaments (GPP's) you want to find payers who have multi point upside and can grab double digit fantasy points. To stack the most upside in your forwards a common strategy is to punt the defense position. This doesn't mean just grab anyone. Try and look for a D man who will be playing more PP time or might get a boost in overall playing time due to an injury.
Let's take a look at some solid plays for today's action.
Jonathan Quick - Goaltender, Kings (DraftKings - $8,300 FanDuel - $ )
The San Jose Sharks had a chance to take a nearly insurmountable 3-0 lead on the Los Angeles Kings. All they had to do was score an overtime goal at home in game three. But that goal was scored by the Kings, on the road, shifting the momentum of the series. Quick was outstanding in game three after averaging three goals against in the first two games of the series. He saved 29 of 30 shot attempts, earning his first W of the 2015-2016 postseason. Look for him to repeat performances on the road in game four, bringing the series back to Los Angeles tied.
John Tavares - Center, Islanders (DraftKings - $7,900 FanDuel - $ )
Tavares has been an absolute beast against the Florida Panthers in the first round of the playoffs. He has tallied six points (two goals, four assists) through three games, including an impressive 16 shots on goal over that span. The Islanders have the momentum on their side after winning game three in overtime, and taking the lead in the series. Tavares is one of the top Daily Fantasy options lacing up on Wednesday.
Erik Haula - Center, Wild (DraftKings - $4,400 FanDuel - $ )
Haula is coming off an impressive game two where he scored one goal and tallied one assist in 17 minutes of ice time. He's an affordable option that finished the regular season with 36 points. Haula also collected three shots on goal and two blocked shots. Minnesota has gained some momentum after winning a crucial game three.
Patrick Sharp - Winger, Stars (DraftKings - $6,300 FanDuel - $ )
Sharp scored two goals in Dallas' game three loss to the Minnesota Wild. He took an impressive seven shots on net, and is a consistent threat for Daily Fantasy. Look for Sharp to build off of his last performance.
Marcus Johansson - Winger, Capitals (DraftKings - $4,300 FanDuel - $ )
Johansson is another player off to a hot start in the first round of the playoffs. He's picked up a point in all three games versus the Philadelphia Flyers, five total consisting of one goal and four assists. Four out of the five points came via the power play, benefiting users of FanDuel more. He doesn't put the puck on net that often but has displayed the ability to block shots on top of his knack for assisting. He's an affordable option that will help you free up cap space.
Matt Niskanen - Defenseman, Capitals (DraftKings - $5,100 FanDuel - $ )
Niskanen holds a lot more value in DraftKings because of his shot blocking skills. Niskanen has tallied multiple blocked shots in each of the first three games of the series, 10 total. Five of the 10 came in his last game. Niskanen has also tallied one helper so far and finished the regular season with 28. He's a solid option that doesn't need to score or assist to affect Daily Fantasy lineups, but is more than capable of doing everything.
Marco Scandela - Defenseman, Wild (DraftKings - $3,900 FanDuel - $ )
Scandela is another affordable defenseman that doesn't need to score to produce for lineups. He is another multiple blocked shot per game candidate, and has also lit the lamp once in the playoffs so far. The goal came via the power play. He's also capable of tallying a good amount of shots on goal, and should be considered for both DraftKings and FanDuel.
