Hector Olivera could be called up as early as Monday to officially join the Atlanta Braves, according to MLB.com.
The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Olivera at the July trade deadline even though they signed the Cuban defector to a six-year, $62.5 million contract. The righty will likely become the starting third baseman in Atlanta.
Olivera strained his hamstring a few weeks before the Braves acquired him, which has slowed his promotion from the minors. The 30-year-old has been killing it in the minors, but it’s been a small sample. In 26 games played, he owns a .303 BA with 2 HR and 7 RBI.
The Braves have lost four games in a row and aren’t going to be playing in October this season. This opens up plenty of big-league at-bats for Olivera. If his debut is on Monday, he will do it in front of the Atlanta crowd against the Colorado Rockies.
