Parris Campbell (WR, IND) - Fantasy Football Draft Values

BALLER MOVE: Target Around 140 Overall

CURRENT ADP: ~175

Analysis: Parris Campbell can potentially finish second in targets among Colts WRs this season.

A strained hamstring and broken foot limited him to just seven games last season, but by all accounts, Campbell is healthy and expected to have an important role in the Colts’ pass offense in 2020.

Some may be concerned that with the Colts drafting WR Michael Pittman in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft, there may not be enough targets to spread around in the offense this season. However, Pittman is likely to play most of his snaps on the outside opposite T.Y. Hilton. That would likely benefit Campbell since that would leave him as the Colts’ primary slot receiver, and that’s a role that he has the opportunity to excel at.

The Colts selected Campbell in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft. He was a highly sought after receiver after posting a 12 TD, 90 catch, 1063 receiving yard season as a senior at Ohio State University. He averaged 12.4 yards per catch in his college career, and while he has some of the skillset required to be successful as a perimeter receiver, he’s made his biggest impact and is better suited to playing underneath, near the line of scrimmage.

Campbell is a speedy receiver who has excellent run after the catch skills. While his explosiveness gives him the potential to be a big-play receiver, he’ll likely provide QB Philip Rivers, whose arm strength isn’t exactly what it used to be, with a receiver who is good at running short to intermediate routes. Drops have sometimes been an issue for Campbell, but with the Colts expected to use him in shorter pass play situations, hopefully that shouldn’t be too much of a problem for him this season. He did show improvement in ball-handling skills at his combine workout and in limited play last season, he posted a 75% catch rate.

Most of the receptions Campbell will likely be reeling in will initially be for moderate gains over the middle. However, he is still very dangerous in the open field. Campbell is very good at being able to create separation from defenders. He loses them by quickly changing direction without sacrificing any of his speed. Campbell has a reputation for taking short catches and turning them into huge gains. From reading his draft profiles, his ability to score a touchdown off any play is frequently mentioned.

Colts head coach Frank Reich has a knack for creating offensive schemes that cater to his quarterbacks. The Colts were fifth in rushing play percentage last season and will continue to run the ball a great deal this season. However, they’re not going to totally abandon their passing game. Rivers is still a capable QB, and he’s going to benefit from playing behind the Colts’ formidable offensive line. Reich knows that at this stage of Rivers’ career, he’ll benefit from playing in an offense that includes a lot of quick, short passes that could set up the occasional big play. Creating that type of passing offensive scheme will benefit Rivers and will make Campbell a viable fantasy football receiver this season as well.
