Memorial Tournament Review

Swiss born David Lingmerth outlasted Justin Rose in a third hole playoff to capture the 40th Memorial Tournament and his first PGA Tournament win. Lingmerth and Rose both entered the playoff at 15 under, while Jordan Spieth and Francesco Molinari missed out on the playoff by a mere two shots, tying for third.

However, the story of the weekend remained Tiger Woods’ abysmal performance on Saturday where he shot a career worst 85. That round included 4 shots in the water and a quadruple-bogey on the 18th. He finished his final day off on Sunday shooting a two over, 74, and finished the tournament at +14. Woods finished in last place among players to make the cut, making that his first time ever to do that according to Elias. Woods will not be playing this week at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

DFS Golf Picks for the St. Jude Classic

The FedEx St. Jude Classic will be played from June 11-14 on TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. The purse is $6 million and it carries 500 FedEx Cup points. The course is 7,244 yards long and is a par 70. It is considered one of the more difficult courses on the tour. The field for this week’s tournament is not as talented, as many top names will be resting up in anticipation of golf’s hardest test next week, the US Open.

While it seems rather empty, the field does have quite a few notable players taking part including: Dustin Johnson, Charl Schwartzel, Webb Simpson, Phil Mickelson, Billy Horschel, Graeme McDowell, and Luke Donald. Also included in the field are David Toms and Justin Leonard; both going for their 3rd win at this tournament. Ben Crane will also be looking to defend his sought after trophy in Memphis.

High Price DraftKings Picks ($9000 - Max)

Dustin Johnson ($13,000)

While his price is quite inordinate, it should pay off. He is currently the favorite to win the tournament at 11/2 on bovada.com. Johnson ranks number one in average drive at 317 yards and ranks third in putting average. This should allow him to take advantage of enough birdie opportunities to pay off his price. He has six top 10 finishes in 11 events this season and has made nine of those cuts. Last year at this tournament he finished tied for 24th at three under. Look for him to really take advantage of this tune-up before the U.S. Open and be competing late into Sunday.

Paul Casey ($10,500, Vegas 25/1)

If you don’t want to pay up for Johnson, then Casey is a solid alternative. He has not played since the Crowne Plaza on May 21st where he made the cut and finished at two under. He finished tied for sixth at the Masters and has enjoyed a very solid Tour to date. At this tournament last year he finished three under tied for 24th. He has made eight of 12 cuts and had four top 10 finishes. He ranks eighth in greens in regulation and should have himself a very nice outing this weekend.

Also consider Phil Mickelson ($12,000 Vegas 12-1) to really get his game going in preparation of the U.S. Open. It’s impossible to count someone like him out, look for Lefty to attack as he always does late in tournaments.

Mid-Price DraftKings Picks ($7000-$8900)

George McNeill ($8700 Vegas 45-1)

McNeill tore up The Memorial and Crowne Plaza with 94.5 fantasy points and 96.5 fantasy points. He has made 14 of 17 cuts this year and is 30th in putting average, so look for him to connect on some big birdie putts. Last year at FedEx St. Jude Classic he tied for 28th at two under.

Justin Leonard ($7200 Vegas 300/1)

He has been having a dreadful tour so far, making only four of 16 cuts. The only reason he’s a pick is because he has won on this course twice before, 2005 and 2008. He’s got a lot of confidence going into this tournament and can surprise many.

Ben Crane ($7200 Vegas 100-1)

His last tournament at the Byron Nelson didn’t end to well. He was cut early and finished with a meager 28.5 points. Crane ranks 18th in driving accuracy, but has been very unpredictable on this year’s tour. He has missed the cut in his past two of three tournaments, and his highest finish was tied for 37th. He should bring his best golf game looking to defend his title, but be wary.

Russell Knox ($7800 Vegas 50-1)

Knox is also worth considering as he had a nice Crowne Plaza shooting a six under (69.5 fantasy points) and followed that up with a seven under at The Memorial (75 fantasy points).

Low Range DraftKings Picks ($5200- $6900)

David Toms ($6100 Vegas 150-1)

Looking for his third win at this tournament, his price could pay very favorably if he is in the hunt. He finished tied for 13th at the Players, but hasn’t played since missing the cut at the Crowne Plaza. Look for him to regain his mojo at a course he is accustomed to winning at.

Chad Collins ($6400 Vegas 200-1)

If you are looking for a player who will surprise big time and win, look no further than Collins. He’s had a very steady year making the cut in 12 of 16 tournaments including an 11th place tie at the Houston Open. He will get you some points, as he will probably make the cut.

Also consider Jhonattan Vegas ($6900 200-1).
