Phil Hughes pitched his second gem in a row on Wednesday, allowing one run to the Chicago Sox in a Twins’ 6-1 victory.
The Minnesota right-hander has two straight starts of going eight innings and allowing only a single run. Both starts went for victories against the teams from Chicago. It also marked his fourth straight quality start in a row.
Adam LaRoche devliered the only run for the Sox off a home run in the second inning. Hughes, 29, allowed six hits, no walks and five strikeouts en route to his fifth victory of the season. He’s allowed eight total hits over his last two starts.
Hughes had a tough pitching opponent in Chris Sale. The left-hander has a 6-3 record with a 2.74 ERA. Sale has been dominant against every team besides the Twins. In 10 starts against the rest of the league, he has a 1.88 ERA. Against Minnesota, Sale has a 1-3 record, 6.46 ERA, according to Foxsports.com.
Despite a 5-6 record with a 4.47 ERA, Hughes has put together a string of quality starts for a Twins team that is 39-33 and in second place of the deep AL Central. Hughes will start next in Cincinnati vs the Reds.
