The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired RHP Trevor Williams from the Miami Marlins for RHP Richard Mitchell.
This is a minor deal of teams simply swapping young pitchers. Williams, 23, is inching his way closer to the Major League level as a starter while Mitchell, 20, still needs to work his way through the minors before ever being considered for a spot at the highest level.
Williams spent his 2015 season between Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans where he compiled a 3.85 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 101/43 K/BB ratio over 131 innings. Triple-A Indianapolis will likely be the destination of the right-hander to start the 2016 season. He’s a player that could be looked at to potentially join the Pirates’ rotation in the middle of next season.
Mitchell is a working progress. In his four minor league seasons, he has yet to advance beyond the rookie league. In 2015, he posted a 4.22 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 14/9 K/BB ratio over 21 1/3 innings for the Gulf Coast League Pirates. It could still be a few years before he wears a Marlins or any other team’s jersey.
