ANALYSIS: With Tevin Coleman (ankle) out, the 49ers turned to a committee approach to the running back position in Sunday's win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Raheem Mostert ended up leading the team in rushing attempts, carrying the ball 13 times for 83 yards in a game where the other two Niners backs also saw double-digit touches.
Where Mostert stood out was in the passing game, as he caught three passes for 68 yards and a score. Matt Breida was targeted once. Jeffrey Wilson wasn't targeted. In a battle to see who has the value until Coleman returns, those touches matter.
Mostert also led the 49ers running backs in snaps, taking the field for 34 offensive snaps. That was 47 percent of the team's offensive snaps, which suggests that he's going to be the back out of this committee to get the most opportunities moving forward.
The 49ers probably won't be running on a weekly basis as much as they did against the Bengals, but through two weeks we do a pretty clear idea of how this offense is going to work. They'll be using the run game to set up the passing game, with Mostert and Breida likely being the main backs for now with Wilson sprinkled in, but not used as heavily in close games as he was on Sunday. Mostert has a lot of upside right now and can be a flex option in 12-team leagues until Coleman returns.
