The Texas Rangers have acquired Mike Napoli from the Boston Red Sox, according to WEEI.com.
The deal has yet to be confirmed by the Red Sox. Napoli is a free agent at the end of the season, and the Red Sox seem unlikely to re-sign him. He’s struggled this year, hitting .207/.307/.386 with 13 homers and 40 RBI.
The Rangers have crept back into the playoff race after winning four straight games. They are 4 1/2 games behind the Angels and the Astros for first place and only 2 1/2 games out of the second Wild Card spot.
Napoli will add depth to a Texas team that can slug with the best of them. He may catch, play first, and DH as he hopes to find his form from two seasons ago when he had 23 HR and 92 RBI. He actually played two seasons with the Rangers with a combined 54 HR and 131 RBI. If he can come close to producing like that, Texas could find a way to sneak into the postseason.
