Recent Prospect Call-Ups and Their Fantasy Values (Sanchez, Finnegan)

Welcome to another edition of the prospect call-up watch. Unsurprisingly, it has been a slow week in prospect movement. However, two players were recalled who could make a big difference for fantasy baseball managers in the coming weeks of the playoffs.

Editor’s Note: to read about even more MLB prospects, rookies and potential call-ups, be sure to check out our MLB prospects for fantasy baseball homepage which has lots of great weekly analysis.

MLB Prospect Updates & Recent Call-Ups - Week 25

Gary Sanchez (C, NYY, Owned in 0% of fleaflicker leagues)

Gary Sanchez is a versatile catching prospect who has a surprising power and speed combo. In 365 minor league AB in 2015, Sanchez produced a .274 batting average, .815 OPS, 18 HR, and seven steals. That volume of base running is obviously very appealing to fantasy baseball managers looking to squeeze in steals behind the plate. Combine that with Sanchez's power and ability to hit for average, he makes one very promising prospect.

Unfortunately, given the fact that the Yankees already have Brian McCann and John Ryan Murphy at catcher, it seems like Sanchez is serving as late season depth and can't be counted on for much more than a few spot starts. He's also unlikely to draw starts at designated hitter with Greg Bird and Alex Rodriguez in his way.

Brandon Finnegan (SP, CIN, Owned in 2% of fleaflicker leagues)

Brandon Finnegan - now this is something you can work with. He fits right in with the Reds' youth culture rotation, and his style molds perfectly to Great American Ball Park. In 2015, Finnegan has a GB/FB ratio of 1.58 and a GO/FO ratio of 2.73 with only 19 percent line drives. Also this season, Finnegan has a 2.67 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and 8.3 K/9 in 27 IP. That was out of the bullpen.

In Finnegan's first start with Cincinnati, he went five innings, allowing just three hits, two walks, one ER, and producing four strikeouts. Look for Finnegan to finish out the year in the Cincy rotation and to utilize ground balls to stay safe and produce quality starts.
