The Boston Red Sox have placed six players on the revocable trade waiver, which included Rusney Castillo and Hanley Ramirez.
The six players placed on the revocable trade waiver were Castillo, Ramirez, Jackie Bradley Jr., Brock Holt, Craig Breslow and Justin Masterson. None of the players have cleared waivers yet despite being placed on the waiver on Thursday.
It's common for veterans to be placed on there because if they clear, they can be traded for what is usually a low price. In the case of Ramirez, the outfielder and former infielder is owed $22 million over the next four seasons. The interest in a contract worth that much could make the interest minimal for Ramirez and Castillo as well.
Castillo signed a seven-year $72,500,000 contract to leave Cuba and join the Red Sox. The outfielder played in the final 10 games of the 2014 season when he had a .333 BA with 2 HR and 6 RBI. The 28-year-old was not on the main roster to start the 2015 season because of a deep outfield. When he got the chance to play, he did not produce. He's swinging a better bat now and has a .269 BA with 2 HR and 14 RBI in 39 games this season.
Bradley Jr. has a .148 BA with 2 HR and 9 RBI in 75 at-bats during 25 games this season. He's a 25-year-old outfielder that hasn't found his bat in the majors. A new team could be the perfect recipe for the young player.
Holt, 27, made his first All-Star team this year. The infielder has a .276 BA with 2 HR and 28 RBI this year. He plays a good infield at all positions and gets on base consistently.
Breslow, 35, has a 4.25 ERA out of the bullpen in Boston this year in 34 games in 2015. The left-hander could be an extra arm and possibly the lefty that one team needs down the final stretch of the season.
Masterson, 30, is not having a good year. The right-hander has 5.61 ERA while being a starter and coming out the Red Sox bullpen. The eight-year veteran could be used in either situation wherever he possibly lands.
The waiver trade deadline is on Aug. 31, though teams can still make trade waivers after. Any player traded after Aug. 31 is ineligible for the postseason.
