ANALYSIS: On Sunday, it was announced that Washington Wizards center Thomas Bryant would miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. A difficult season for the Wizards is getting more difficult, as a player who was expected to be part of the future in Washington is done until the 2021-22 season.
Washington's center rotation beyond Bryant isn't great, which is why we're about to see a lot of free-agent signing Robin Lopez, who likely slides into the starting role, with Moritz Wagner getting some minutes as his backup.
Through 10 games, Lopez is playing just 15.2 minutes per game, with averages of 6.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks per game. Obviously not great numbers, but an expanded role should lead to stronger numbers from RoLo.
The last time he averaged over 20 minutes per game, for instance, Lopez averaged 9.5 points, 39 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. Factor in that he's started taking more threes, and there's a clear path to some deep-league value here, especially if he ends up playing closer to 25 minutes, at which point we can probably expand his points projection into double digits.
Look, Lopez isn't the most exciting option in the world, but in a 14-team league, you don't always get a chance to grab a starting center off the waiver wire. Well, one's available!
