The St. Louis Cardinals activated Trevor Rosenthal from the paternity leave list on Monday.
The NL Central first-place Cardinals will welcome the Washington Nationals for a three-game series while they get back their All-Star closer after his wife gave birth to a baby girl. The 25-year-old missed the weekend series against the San Francisco Giants, which the Cards took two out of the three games in.
Rosenthal is second in MLB with 41 saves, only behind Pittsburgh Pirates closer Mark Melancon’s 43 saves. The right-hander has a 1.52 ERA over 58 games pitched this season after saving 45 games with a 3.20 ERA in his first season a year ago as the Cardinals closer.
The Cardinals have been the best team in MLB all season long. They currently own a 4 1/2 game lead over the Pirates for first place in the NL Central. It’s great timing to get their closer back because the Pirates will go into St. Louis for a huge three-game series.
