The Kansas City Royals found out on Wednesday that Jason Vargas's season is done because he has to undergo Tommy John surgery. They are looking to replace him with possibly Johnny Cueto or Yovani Gallardo.
The left-handed Vargas was 5-2 with a 3.98 ERA this season. Cueto and Gallardo could be good fits as the first place Royals make a run for their second straight trip to the World Series.
Gallardo has been excellent during his first season with the Texas Rangers. The 29-year-old has a 7-9 record with a 2.91 ERA, which is the 10th best in the American League. The right-hander also owns a 1.27 WHIP and 80/43 K/BB ratio in 117 1/3 innings. It's his best season since his 2010 All-Star year.
Cueto is in the middle of another great season on the mound with the Cincinnati Reds. The 29-year-old owns a 6-6 record with a 2.79 ERA and 115 strikeouts. Last season, Cueto won 20 games, and has been one of the better pitchers in MLB over the last few years.
