Herrera, 25, has had a great start to his four-year career with the Royals while emerging among the elite relief pitchers in any bullpen last season. Along with Wade Davis and closer Greg Holland, Kelvin Herrera pitched to a 1.41 ERA over 70.0 innings in 70 games during the regular season. In his first taste of the postseason, Herrera continued to be dominant, pitching to a 1.80 ERA all the way to the World Series, appearing in 11 games and pitching in 15 innings.
Utilizing a fastball that exceeds 98 MPH on average, Herrera exceeded a strikeout per inning in 2013 but in 2014 he saw a steep dip in his strikeouts but he cut his ERA down by more than half to make him even more effective despite the strikeout total.
Kelvin Herrera qualified as a Super Two player, meaning he will be under control until the 2018 season where he will be arbitration-eligible two more times.
