The Royals placed Yordano Ventura on the 15-day DL, according to the Kansas City Star.
The right-handed pitcher for Kansas City has ulnar neuritis, according to the report. The DL move is retroactive to June 13. The 24-year-old was forced to leave his previous start on Friday due to irritation in his pitching hand. He was able to pitch through a bullpen session on Monday with no issues.
He was scheduled to start against the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Kansas City decided to take precautionary measures and place him on the DL. Yohan Pino will start in his place. It will be Pino’s MLB debut.
“It didn’t make any sense to try and push through this thing right now,” Royals manager Ned Yost told the Kansas City Star. “This is something that if you continue to battle through it, it can get worse.”
Ventura is 3-6 with a 4.68 ERA this year after a 3.20 ERA in 30 starts last season. He’s been inconsistent this season. In his last two starts, he’s pitched a combined six innings in which he allowed six runs.
