The Kansas City Royals signed free agent pitcher Dillon Gee to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training, according to CBS Sports.
The right-hander was last seen in MLB last season as a starter with the New York Mets. Gee was giving the boot once the rookie sensations were called up to the main roster. Gee was struggling with a 5.90 ERA over 30 2/3 innings pitched during his sixth big league season. The Mets moved in a different direction, which helped the team reach the World Series. A few months later, and the World Series champion Royals are willing to take a flier on a player that owns a career 3.91 ERA before 2015.

Johnny Cueto signed with the San Francisco Giants on Monday, which opens up a spot in the rotation. There’s a legitimate chance that Gee could become the fifth starter in the Kansas City rotation. If not, he’ll get a chance to prove what he’s got by starting with the Triple-A Omaha rotation.
