Max Scherzer almost tossed another no-hitter on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds but settled for one run over innings pitched in a 5-1 victory.
The first hit came in the eighth inning when Tucker Barnhart lined a single to left field, which ruined the possibility of a second no-hitter of the season for Scherzer. The right-hander allowed one run and two hits total on the day while walking three and striking out 10 batters.
Monday marked the first win at home since Scherzer’s no-hitter on June 20. Lightning almost struck twice for the eight-year veteran.
It’s been a disappointing season for the Nationals. One of the few bright spots besides Bryce Harper has been Scherzer. The 31-year-old now has a 13-12 record with a 2.91 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 259 strikeouts over 219 2/3 innings.
The final start of his first season with the Nationals will be over the weekend against the NL East-winning New York Mets.
