The Washington Nationals got their money’s worth with Max Scherzer, as the ace struck out a career-high 16 batters in a one-hit shutout.
After being perfect through six innings, the 30-year-old allowed a hit to Carlos Gomez of the Milwaukee Brewers. Despite the hit, he only walked one batter en route to his dominant performance for the 4-0 win.
"I really felt good after about the second inning, when I was really executing the slider," Scherzer told MLB.com. "I was really executing my game plan. I had a good feel with [Jose Lobaton], too. We were in sync. I didn't really need to do too much other than just go with him."
Scherzer now improved his stellar ERA to 1.93, his WHIP to 0.88 and his K/BB ratio to 113/14 in over 93 1/3 innings of work in 2015. His record has now improved to 7-5 as he looks to win his second Cy Young award in his career.
The right-hander signed a seven-year $210 million contract during the offseason as the key acquisition for the Nats.
His next starts will be Friday at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
