ANALYSIS: With Josh Staumont on the injured list, the Royals' closer role is once again up for grabs. While the team's only save opportunity since Staumont suffered a knee sprain was granted to veteran Greg Holland, Scott Barlow has been Kansas City's best reliever in 2021.
The 28-year-old has posted a 2.00 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 41 strikeouts in 27 innings to date. As the latter ratio implies, Barlow can occasionally be a bit too liberal with free passes, but he racks up enough strikeouts to compensate and also does a good job keeping the ball on the ground and out of the stands. In his most recent appearance, he struck out four of the seven batters he faced and covered the bulk of the seventh and eighth innings, an indication that he's next in line should Holland and his 1.68 WHIP falter in the final frame.
