BALLER MOVE: Add Immediately
ANALYSIS: Sean Doolittle is a relief pitcher that for the past few years I expected to take the closer role in Oakland and run away with it. He has the filthy stuff it takes to be the dominant late inning reliever he has shown flashes of, but sometimes seemed to throw a stinker in there when he gets his shot. This season once again a shot is available with Jim Johnson being shaky at best. If there's a team that is not afraid to admit they made a mistake, it's the A's, who have readily discarded Johnson as their closer and installed Doolittle as the incumbent. Doolittle is striking out guys at an incredible clip (33 Ks in 24 innings). He has an average ERA for an eight inning man at 3.00, but his perhipherals say it should be better. His WHIP is phenomenal at 0.79, which in my opinion is the most important stat for a late inning reliever. Doolittle has a huge 55% fly ball rate, which might lead to the occasional home run, but if he can stay away from giving those up he can be a top closer in the American League. If you need a total package closer, and who doesn't, then he is a must add.
