Matt Shoemaker was dominant on Thursday in his return to the Angels rotation as he allowed one hit over 7 1/3 innings during the 2-0 victory.
It was a duel on the mound between Shoemaker and Randy Wolf. Shoemaker struck out five and allowed one walk during his dominant performance. Wolf allowed one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings pitched. The lone run off of Wolf came off an Albert Pujols knock in the sixth inning. The Angels added one more in the ninth before Huston Street shut it down for the save.
Shoemaker was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on August 16. His return showed that the right-hander isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The 28-year-old still owns a 4.48 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with a 7-9 record as he faces the Oakland A’s in his next start.
The Angels have climbed back into only a half a game out of the second AL Wild Card spot. They’re currently 5 1/2 behind the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West.
