Spencer Hawes (PF/C, CHA) - NBA Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Speculative Add in Deep Leagues

OWNED: 1% of Yahoo! Fantasy Basketball Leagues

By this point in the season, the dust has settled and we have a pretty good idea how most players are going to perform. That’s why capitalizing on injuries, whether short or long term, is so vital now. It was confirmed earlier this week that Al Jefferson has a strained calf and will be sideline for 2-3 weeks, and I think it could be longer depending on how the Hornets play without him.

Some people might be looking to pick up Cody Zeller as the player who will benefit most from the injury, as he was announced as the starter for Charlotte’s next game. However, I think it will be Spencer Hawes who will have the biggest boost to his value.   With the Hornets right in the hunt for the last few spots in the playoffs, I think coach Steve Clifford will have to stick with the proven veteran as opposed to the young and very unproven alternatives in Frank Kaminsky and Cody Zeller.

Hawes can do one thing pretty well, and that’s score. He’s a threat both inside and out, although he’s definitely relied more on his long range game of late. His defense is lacking, but Al Jefferson wasn’t out there for his defense either, so Hawes won’t make the situation any worse. I’m very confident that Hawes fits what Coach Steve Clifford wants to run more so than any other healthy big on their roster. Hawes will help spread the floor for Kemba Walker, and the reemerging Nicolas Batum, and should be able to pick up the defense well enough to keep him on the floor.

If Hawes can see close to 25 minutes a game in Jefferson's absence, I would not be surprised to see him post averages of over 10 points, 2 3PM, and 4 rebounds, with a few blocks and assists sprinkled on top.
