ANALYSIS: Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Reynaldo Lopez has allowed just three earned runs in 19 innings this season, making him a hot early season addition. The former top prospect, who was acquired by the White Sox in the Adam Eaton trade, has allowed just eight hits and has struck out 21 batters in his three starts.
While his hot start cannot be dismissed, Lopez has also walked 11 batters this season and had four walks in seven innings in his last start (Monday against the Athletics). He also had greater than a 2:1 FB:GB ratio in his start against Detroit on April 9 (five groundballs and 12 flyballs), and is a very heavy FB pitcher in general, which does not bode well for his future home run rate.
After Lopez had a 1.08 ERA in 83 1/3 low minors innings in 2014, Lopez has regressed in some aspects, but did have 131 strikeouts in 121 innings for Triple-A Charlotte last season. After a strong start against the Athletics on Monday (striking out 10 batters in a quality start), Lopez will face the Astros on Sunday.
