Stephen Strasburg left Sunday’s game against the Miami Marlins with tightness in his back.
The Washington Nationals starting pitcher has been dealing with the same pain all season. Sometimes it acts up, as it did again on Sunday, when Strasburg had to leave after only four innings. The right-hander had allowed four runs and was on track for the loss until the Nats took the lead after five.
“I had a little bit of back tightness,” Strasburg told The Post. “This is something I kind of dealt with in the middle of the year. Just got some sort of little ball that’s kind of in the back there, can’t really figure out what it is. Sometimes it gets upset, tried to battle through it.”
Nationals manager Matt Williams said that Strasburg told him about the tightness, but it was the speed of his pitches that really gave Williams reason enough to sit him.
“Velocity came down a little bit today, so we got him out of there,” Williams said. “Certainly had more pitching to do, but last thing we want to do is change mechanics. Can’t go there.”
Strasburg had been excellent since he returned from the DL. In four starts, he allowed four runs total over 26 innings pitched with 32 strikeouts.
The next start for the former first overall pick is still slated for Friday.
