ANALYSIS: In the early days of 2019, no position has gone from "yeah, it's really deep" to "umm" faster than quarterback. Andrew Luck retired. Nick Foles broke his collarbone. Ben Roethlisberger's season is over.
And in New Orleans, Drew Brees went down with a thumb injury that's expected to cost him six weeks of his season. With Brees gone, the Saints are asking former Vikings Pro Bowler Teddy Bridgewater to step in.
Bridgewater's dealt with injuries of his own that derailed a promising career, but the Saints have seemed invested in him being their post-Brees future over the past couple of years. He gets a chance to show if he can be that now. New Orleans has a ton of weapons -- Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara, plus other solid backs and receivers -- around Bridgewater.
On Sunday, Bridgewater struggled. 17-for-30 for 165 yards and no touchdowns is definitely not Brees numbers. But Sean Payton will have all week to shift things in this offense for Bridgewater, and the team that's built around him should make him a solid QB2. Yes, that's a pretty sharp drop from the consistent QB1 numbers you got from Brees, but if you're in need of a quarterback on your bench, give Teddy a look.
