“Laying the hammer down” is one of those idiomatic power phrases reserved for the likes of Thor and Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor. In spite of what Texans’ quarterback Ryan Mallett’s surname might suggest, he doesn’t belong in the aforementioned group of macho men. However, Texans’ head coach Bill O’Brien couldn’t disagree more.
In fact, O’Brien even went as far as emphatically backing his quarterback of choice earlier today, saying, “He’s our starting quarterback.” That said, O’Brien did go out of his way to say that Mallet “has to play better.”
Considering that Mallett’s last performance had him completing just 12 of 27 passes for 150 yards and one interception, it’s easy to see why Texans’ fans aren’t nearly as optimistic as their head coach.
Though a bit of chest pain caused Mallett to leave Sunday’s game against the Colts late in the third quarter, rest assured, barring an unexpected incident during this week’s various practice sessions, Mallet should be back under center come Sunday. After all, it’s widely assumed that just about anything with a pulse is better than Brian Hoyer.
While most fantasy owners have opted to pass on Mallett, they’d be wise to consider the number of carries Arian Foster could very well see in the game. With a bigger role and a depleted Colts team, Foster could easily have his biggest game of the year.
