After an opening day save, Detroit Tigers closer, Joe Nathan, has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right flexor strain in his pitching elbow, according to HardballTalk.
The 40-year-old, 15-year veteran, was hoping to bounce back from a really bad season. Nathan pitched in 62 games last season with Detroit. He finished with a 4.81 ERA, while he had a 1.39 and 2.80 ERA the previous two seasons.
Nathan came in for the one-out save on opening day as David Price was unable to go the distance for the complete game shutout. He struck out his former longtime teammate Torii Hunter. After the game, Nathan was dealing with soreness in his elbow and was quickly sent to the 15-day DL.
The #Tigers today placed RHP Joe Nathan on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow flexor strain retroactive to April 7th.

Last season he blew seven of 42 save chances. Fortunately for the Tigers, they have Joakim Soria ready to step into the closer role.
Soria is coming off what was a solid season with Texas, but after he was traded to Detroit mid-season, he had a 4.91 ERA. The 30-year-old veteran also has two seasons with Kansas City where he had over 40 saves.
