Intro
The most common type of fantasy basketball leagues are scored with head-to-head categories. In those leagues, a strong strategy involves concentrating your player's weaknesses into a few categories -- punting them -- so you can find surplus value in the other categories and dominate them on a week-to-week basis. Thus players with extreme strengths and extreme weaknesses have outstanding value in H2H leagues -- like Russell Westbrook with his insane counting stats and bad FG% and turnover totals, or Andre Drummond with his big time rebounding and terrible FT%. You can quarantine their weaknesses to become unbeatable in their strengths.
Roto leagues don't work like that. Selecting Dwight Howard and dropping from middle of the pack to dead last in FT% to jump from 3rd best in rebounds to 1st place isn't worth the tradeoff like it can be in H2H leagues. Instead, it's better to select players who brings balanced value across as many categories as possible without extreme weaknesses.
My philosophies in determining these roto rankings can be found in a prior post on scoring systems in fantasy basketball. In short, I have downgraded players with huge weaknesses in any one category, while I have upgraded players with a balanced stat line who don't have the individual category strengths that help them shine in H2H.
I have also taken into account the tendency of lower ranked teams not to max out their counting stats, which means you'll be competing with them in the percentages, but not counting stats -- so I've placed a little more weight on players who are a net positive in combined impact of FG% and FT%. Finally, I find assists and blocks can be particularly tricky to find without selecting players who are inefficient in categories -- so I like to put a little more weight on early picks who will deliver in those areas without poor percentages or a high turnover count. It's a little easier to find the other stats later, and to play catch-up in the regular season.
Without further ado, here are my 2018-19 fantasy basketball roto league rankings.
